How stainless steel is affected by and resists corrosion - Development of stainless steel for railway station roofing in india
Steel is the most utilized material of construction. Material selection for projects which are likely to encounter corrosion and corrosion/abrasion is normally not a simple cost versus performance calculation. The inevitable cost of reducing the effect of corrosion must be included so that a true comparison can be made. However, Nature resents unnatural forms of material and therefore retaliates by causing an epidemic to revert steel, an unnatural form of iron, to its natural oxide Stainless Steel is also an Iron-based (Ferrous) material which, on account of its primary property of Corrosion Resistance, is used in severely aggressive conditions where corrosion abounds. An understanding of the basic mechanisms of corrosion will assist in judicial use of Stainless Steel in situations and conditions where normal carbon steels are affected. In the second part of this paper, analysis is made on the first ever use of stainless steel for roofing of a Railway Station in a very hostile seashore and chemical/petrochemical industrial location in India prone to corrosive attack. The life cycle costing on use of SS for Roofing for this project explains the long term benefits of Stainless Steel for similar applications. (VDEh)
