Weather resistant steels as a material for sustainable steel buildings
Weather resistant steels (weathering steels) comprise a group of high strength, low alloy steels containing elements (Cu, Ni, Cr) which, under normal atmospheric conditions give an increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared with that of ordinary structural carbon steels. The increased atmospheric corrosion resistance of these steels enables them to be used in the unpainted condition in many structural and architectural applications. Provided certain straightforward precautions are taken in siting, design and fabrication, a long service life with minimal maintenance can be expected. This is a real advantage in a situation where future maintenance costs could be high, e.g. difficult access. So, the unique ability of bare weathering steels to form a dense, tightly adherent oxide film can enhance service life, minimize on-going maintenance or recoating and provide aesthetic interest to a structure's exterior and furthermore bare steel is the most recyclable material, can easily be reused and used also with other materials. These facts together make weathering steel as a sustainable material choice for different type of structures; bridges, buildings, facade structures etc. (VDEh)
