Dynamic mechanical behavior of steam-treated wood
Steamed Spruce wood, compressed in uniaxial strain, is loaded cyclically under stress control. The strain level is a smooth function of stress level and duration of loading in the radial direction, but a step function of stress level and test duration in the longitudinal direction. The dissipating proportion of applied energy is almost independent of stress amplitude and loading frequency in the radial direction, but somewhat frequency-dependent along the grain. In the radial direction, there surprisingly is an inverse relationship between stress amplitude on the one hand and strain amplitude and displacement amplitude on the other hand. The plastic strain is far greater along the grain. Cell wall porosity does not change in radial loading, whereas longitudinal loading increases the amount of small pores and reduces the amount of large pores.
