A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Supercritical fluids, which represent gases or liquids held above their supercritical temperatures and pressures, undergo a phase change so that they exhibit the solvent characteristics of a fluid and the diffusion capabilities of a gas. These factors plus the advantage of zero residue and no VOC indicate potential for use as a carrier material or solvent for silicones used for impregnation and coating of porous substrates such as wood, cement/concrete, bricks, polymers, elastomers, fabrics, etc. Although the paper focuses on supercritical CO2 (SC), it is feasible that some silanes will exhibit some affinity with near-critical CO2 (NC) or even liquid CO2 at low concentrations. The potential revolution with wood and other porous materials for infiltration with supercritical fluids and silicones is discussed. Topics dealt with include the problems of wood coating, supercritical fluids, impregnation of wood with biocides, impregnation with hydrophobic materials (dirt, stain, oil and water repellents, fire retardants), coatings (powder coating, inverse microemulsions, microporosity), as well as future prospects and problems to be solved.
