Camera photonics for bridge condition monitoring
This paper presents a study an using high-resolution digital camera to obtain geometric information an bridges to monitor their condition. These cameras have a CCD or CMOS optical sensor with a matrix of up to several millions of sub-sensors. Each of them is referred to as a pixel, which can be viewed to provide data about a point an the bridge structure. All such data can be used to obtain geometric description of the bridge, using digital signal processing discussed in this paper. The processed data are proposed to be used for diagnosing and monitoring the bridge's condition. The presented diagnosis procedure uses probabilistic techniques to estimate the likelihood of structural damage. In the laboratory experiments conducted, several small reductions of stiffness were introduced to a model bridge structure, to test whether they were detectable. The smallest one was a reduction of 3 percent. Results show that all the damage conditions were detectable.
