Ductal: a new generation of ultra high performance fiber reinforced concrete
Bouygues, Lafarge and Rhodia companies have led a five years joint R&D program with the participation of more than 10 university teams. Starting from the Reactive Powder Concrete developed by Bouygues, this work lead to a range of products named Ductal which combine ultra high strength and ultra high durability with good work-ability. Ultra high toughness was achieved by combining the use of macrofibers (steel or organic fibers, 10 - 15 mm long) with the use of mineral microfibers (length < 1 mm). This double scale reinforcement in a ultra high strength matrix lead to a tough and ductile material. The very low porosity of the matrix and more precisely the lack of connection between pores give an exceptional resistance to gas or ion transportation which leads to very good durability, one hundred time higher than the one of HSC. These big leaps in performances are already used for industrial applications.
