A simulating model for segregation in fresh concrete
In the practical usage, the term segregation indicates the phenomenon of coarse aggregate in concrete separating from the matrix during placing. The segregation is usually caused by the inadequate cohesiveness or viscosity of the matrix and relates to interaction between the matrix and the coarse aggregate. Using two-phase material concept and dynamic analysis principle, this research proposes a numerical model to simulate the segregation in fresh concrete. The segregation trend is evaluated by relative velocity difference affecting by matrix viscosity and internal friction between coarse aggregate and matrix. Numerical results show a good agreement with those observed by experiment. The numerical model can adequately assess the plastic viscosity coefficient of the matrix by which segregation occurs in concrete. In particular, it demonstrates the effect of viscosity of matrix on the segregation and the displacement of ingredient in concrete, and provides a valuable quantitative result.
