Recycling solid wastes as building materials
This paper demonstrates the feasibility of producing a new material by mixing and sintering a glass obtained by the vitrification of bottom ash from Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators (MSWIs) and powdered waste from other industries. The bottom ashes from several MSWIs were vitrified by heating in a resistance furnace at 1400 deg C without adding any glass cullet or flux agent. The obtained glass was powdered and mixed to other powdered industrial wastes, then sintered with a low temperature pressure-Iess method. The sintered materials show a Young modulus of about 50 GPa and a bending strength of about 60 MPa and 40 MPa at room temperature and 900 deg C, respectively. These materials, totally made of waste products, could be good candidates for building applications (tiles, bricks,...).
