A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
At the Barnegat Bay south of Sandy Hook on the New Jersey coast, the foundation of the historic Barnegat lighthouse has been eroded by strong daily tidal currents. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was faced with the problem how to place erosion protection underwater in some of the strongest tidal currents in the continental United States. What made the project a non-traditional venture was the choice of a large, biaxial geogrid system. The Triton Marine Mattress system is a high strength, biaxially oriented geogrid. The mattress is used to contain stone and filter cloth. Its purpose in this application was two-fold, the primary purpose being the deployment of the filter layer. The geogrid material was strong enough to facilitate lifting and placing the filled mattress units, and the stone fill acted as ballast to sink the geotextile in the swift moving water. Having all of the materials contained in the geogrid also made it easier to verify accurate placement of the filter layer. The secondary benefit to the mattress system is load distribution of the armour layer.
