A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This contribution introduces fibre-optic sensors as a powerful tool for different measurement tasks in civil engineering: reliable long-term monitoring of structure components as well as material investigations by material-integrated tiny fibre sensors. After an introduction to fibre sensor principles and their characteristics, the mainly used fibre sensor types are shortly explained and examples of application are described. The main intention of the author is to awaken interest in this innovative technique as well as to make potential users more sensitive to important criteria to be considered when choosing fibre sensors for definite measurement tasks.
