Civil engineering concrete structures telemonitorization using fiber optic technology
A civil engineering concrete structures quasi-distributed sensor system has been developed which is able to make a quasi-distributed strain and temperature measurement. The system has the following parts: a new strain and temperature fibre optic transducer, an optic channel, an optoelectronic unit and a telecommunication system. The later is used to transport measurement data to the customer office to have a real time assessment of the structure behaviour and conditions. An FBG based transducer and an optical channel were designed and tested first with a laboratory concrete beam flexural test, and later on a real installation in a concrete bridge. Both types of tests gave good results and demonstrate the feasibility of fiber optic technology for civil engineering concrete structures. A real-time Web based telemonitorization system was also developed. The information of the structure behaviour can be visualized at long distance from the measurement site.
