Two-pack waterborne polyurethanes for furniture coatings
Various 2-pack waterborne polyurethane formulations were tested and compared for their performance for coating wooden substrates and the influence of solvent to dilute the hardener (isocyanate). Properties tested included chemical resistance, gloss, and hardness and the results are discussed in detail. The choice of the right polyol allows a balance to be reached between costs and performance. Some properties, such as ease of introduction of the hardener by hand and determination of the pot-life by means of the viscosity increase, can be optimized by choosing the right solvent to dilute the polyisocyanate. The authors are convinced that waterborne 2K PU systems will gain a significant market share and that new polyols and hydrophilic polyisocyanates will be developed with improved properties. This work is preceded by a review of 2-pack coatings. Topics discussed include wood finishes for interior elements, wood finishes for furniture, polyurethane coatings (polyol and polyisocyanate components), and general requirements for 2-pack waterborne PU coatings (developments, chemical reactions of polyisocyanates, crosslinking, polyisocyanates for 2-pack waterborne PU coatings).
