Alkyd emulsions in the Scandinavian coatings market
The use of exterior coatings for timber structures in Scandinavia are discussed with particular regard to recent developments in the use of environmentally friendly alkyd emulsions for formulating penetrating primers, primers and topcoats with formulation examples. Topics dealt with include history of the use of timber and timber coating systems, present situation in Scandinavia (VOC legislation and environmental challenges, latest developments in alkyd emulsions, requirements of an alkyd emulsions for exterior wood coatings in Scandinavia, exterior impregnating primer for dipping and brush application, exterior undercoat/primer, exterior topcoat, other formulations, exterior transparent wood stain, and drier combination evaluations in alkyd emulsion stains. The choice of one of the latest alkyd emulsion systems will enable the formulator to meet the requirements of the most recent environmental legislation and labeling schemes.
