Short-circuit faults in electrical cables and cords exposed to radiant heat
There are various failure machanisms that cause electrical fires. A short-circuit fault in an electrical cable/cord exposed to radiant heat in a fire is usually initiated by some preceding activity like an arc tracking on insulating material or a physical (metal-to-metal) contact of hot conductors. Melting of insulating material, such as polycinyl chloride (PVC), may cause a physical contact of conductors. If insulating material between conductors is carbonized and becomes conductive, a significant current may flow through the char. In this study, various types of PVC and rubber-insulated cables and cords were exposed to radiant heat using a cone heater. Short-circuit faults and ignitions of insulating materials mainly depended upon the size of cable/cord, matials of insulation and the strength of radiant heat. It is discussed when and how a short-circuit fault is poduced in an electrical cable/cord under exposure to radiant heat. It can be expected that cables and cords will probably cause short-circuit if they burn or exposed to severe heat of fire. But they do not always result in short circuit.
