Development of VOC compliant binders for interior wood coatings
Methods to formulate VOC-compliant acrylic dispersion binders for waterborne resins are discussed and key application properties are investigated and compared to conventional solvent-borne system. In particular, two new product ranges were investigated: i) a one-pack self-crosslinking acrylic dispersion and ii) waterborne 2K non-isocyanate systems for industrial wood coatings market. The IK furniture binders, that have a combination of gradient morphology, power feed, and complementary crosslinking mechanism together with correct additives give an interior coating that meets the demands of interior wood applications. The particular properties of these coatings are discussed. Compared to polyurethane-polyol systems there are several advantages: the 2 components can be mixed by hand, the potlife is considerably longer, and the resistance and mechanical properties are comparable to isocyanate 2K systems. This system also dries very rapidly compared to standard acrylic dispersions, so that wet-on-wet spray applications are possible
