Building materials with waste
The present paper discusses building materials containing spent blast furnace slag sorbents. The latter are used in wastewater treatment plants for heavy metal ions removal. The investigations of the different compositions containing ordinary portland cement (CEM I) and heavy metal containing spent sorbents are performed. The strength properties of the compositions are determined, as well as trends of metal ions leaching in case of contact of the samples with water. On the basis of the investigations carried out and the results received the following conclusions can be made: 1. It is possible to receive binders from ordinary Portland cement (CEM I) with addition of spent blast furnace slag sorbents. 2. The binders of this type have sufficient strength characteristics and can be used for structures with low bearing capacity. 3. The leaching of Zn (2+) and Cr (3+) ions from the samples investigated is very weak. This result is connected with the proposed mechanism of sorption and suppression of the heavy metal ions leaching due to the high alkalinity of the cement stone. 4. The low rate of ions' leaching from the cement specimens does not create conditions for pollution of the environment - in particular of the surface and underground waters. 5. A reuse of the spent blast furnace slag sorbents, used for cleaning industrial waste waters from heavy metal ions, is possible which allows to limit environmental pollution and decrease the area for disposal of the spent sorbents.
