Blends of wool with high performance fibres: by a new spinning process (DREF)
The market of protective textiles is growing in many fields such as flame resistance clothing, cut-resistance gloves etc. High performance fibres such as aramides are known to be flame and mechanically resistant etc., but they are sensitive to UV. The purpose of this study is to combine wool with PPTA (Poly-p-phenylenediamineterephtalamide) fibres in different proportions, to obtain articles with properties of interest: flame retardancy, good-hand and other properties such as cutting, abrasion resistance etc., and protection against UV. In first step, we have realized a combination with wool and PPTA fibres by using a traditional spinning process (spun yarn); the product obtained is an intimate blend. In fire tests, a synergistic effect is observed at low amount of PPTA (30 wt.-%). In a second time, it is also expected that protection against UV of the blend may be enhanced, because of the wrapping of PPTA by wool especially can be possible by a new non-conventional spinning process as DREF technology (DREF yarn).
