Feeding flame retardants in plastics compounding
Many powdered flame retardants employed in today's plastic compounding operations do not flow freely, and tend to pack and clump under the mechanical pressures encountered in normal storage, transport, and handling. Additionally, the elevated throughputs and shorter mixing times associated with high-speed compounding and extrusion processes underscore the need for highly accurate second-to-second feeder performance to assure blend quality and consistency. This paper addresses the measures required to meet the material handling challenges of powdered flame retardants, and the various aspects of design that impact on a feeder's ability to perform accurately within the timescale imposed by the process.
