Study on design of high strength steel structures
A study of the use of high strength steel has been conducted from the viewpoint of design with the aim of increasing the adoption of high strength steel structures. Examples of actual constructions have been reviewed for clarification of design problems and new types of structure have been proposed. Workability and cost-effectiveness have been surveyed. Topics covered include: advantages of high strength steel; points to be considered for the design of steel structures; design problems of high strength steel structures (tensile; compressive; buckling and fatigue strength). The results are summarized as follows: By using high strength steel, construction costs are reduced, especially for large-scale structures or cable space structures. The performance of structural members, tensile and compressive strength, stiffness, and fatigue strength must be coordinated with the total performance of the structure. For rationalizing high strength steel structures, it is necessary to review present design criteria and develop new designs that take advantage of high strength steel. Cutting material costs, simplifying fabrication, and shortening the delivery term are necessary. It is assumed that if these issues were realized, the demand for high strength steel would be greatly increased.
