A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Infrared-reflective pigments allow for the design of products that remain cool under the sun. The benefits include energy savings, longer product life, cooler cities and improving the quality of life. The US Department of Energy has found the energy savings provided by a reflective roof so significant that they have made roofing a part of its EnergyStar programme. IR-reflective pigments contribute to keeping our cities cool by maximising the reflectivity of man-made surfaces, such as roofs and pavement. IR-reflecting pigments are coloured ceramic pigments, essentially synthetic minerals. An IR-reflective roof decreases a building's cooling load and saves energy. IR-reflective pigments allow for the manufacture of coloured roofing materials. If we compare the reflectance curves of a cobalt blue and a phthalocyanine blue, the phthalo blue seems more reflective. In reality, the cobalt blue has a higher total solar reflectance. This is because total solar reflectance is based on the reflectance at each wavelength, weighted by the solar intensity at that wavelength. While the phthalo blue may reflect more in the large region from 1100-2500 nm , the cobalt blue reflects more from 700 -1100 nm.
