Inorganic polymers in cement based materials
The microstructure of poorly crystalline Calcium Silicate Hydrates in hydrated cements is not fully understood. The crystalline Calcium Silicate Hydrates however, although rare in nature, are better explored and their structures well known. A brief introduction to some selected crystalline C-S-H-compounds is presented. These have been classified according to modified Strunz classification in terms of polymerised silicate anion structure. Some comments are made about striking similarities between structures. In addition, a direct relationship between the degree of polymerisation and the temperature of formation is shown. As is the relationship between calcium depletion (lowering of the C/S-ratio) and increasing polymerisation. This reflects the real situation of C-S-H gels in cement pastes where the C/S ratio decreases due to carbonation or formation of portlandite during the course of hydration.
