The panel surfacing business - future challenges
This paper summarises the current situation in the composite panel surfacing business. Low pressure melamine (LPM) is identified as the dominant surface globally, accounting for 34% of the market worldwide. The use of LPM dominates in Europe while in Asia-Pacific and the Americas, veneers still hold significant market share. However, this situation is changing due to decreasing availability of relatively cheap hardwoods for decorative applications in these regions as well as the adoption of European trends in furniture manufacturing. Pricing pressure from the retail end of the value chain has resulted in many European panel producers integrating down the panel surfacing value chain, thus panel producers in Europe now dominate the LPM laminating sector and have effectively forced most independents into niche positions. Successful surfacing solutions will deliver durability, visual quality and above all cost effectiveness. Technical and product innovation are the critical factors determining which surfacing materials will succeed and grow.
