Curing behaviour of MUF resins
In this study the hardening of melamin-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resins has been compared with the curing behaviour of MUF/accelerator mixtures. The resin structure has been investigated by 13C NMR spectroscopy. Chemical and mechanical cross-linking of the MUF was characterised by means of rheology, gel time measurements as well as ABES tests. The analysis indicates that cured MUFs are mainly composed from MF and UF networks. The addition of formaldehyde donating accelerator to MUF resin prior to cure increases only the cross linking speed of the UF part of the MUF resin. Thus particleboards glued with a MUF/accelerator mixture exhibit improved mechanical properties compared to boards produced with commercially used MUF adhesives. Since the accelerator hardly influences the course of the MF condensation during the hardening process of a MUF resin, the swelling properties of particleboards glued with a MUF/accelerator mixture and the boards made from commercial MUF are the same.
