Durability of galvanized steel framing in residential building wall interiors
Galvanized steel framing has many advantages over competitive building materials in load bearing residential building walls. To address concerns of specifiers about the durability of galvanized steel framing a series of long-term tests are underway in North America, and these have been coordinated with a counterpart European study. Instrumented wall cavities were installed within houses in temperate, coastal and tropical marine environments, using test coupons of Galvalume, GalfanR and conventional galvanized sheet. Time of wetness was found to be the most important factor governing corrosion performance and occurred when cavity dewpoints exceeded local temperature. Samples removed were essentially rust free, with only isolated instances of white rust, and coating weight losses that in many cases approached the detection limit of conventional analysis equipment.
