Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) as a disinfectant for potable water is better than liquid chlorine to kill bacteria and viruses, but ClO2 produces 2 kinds of inorganic byproducts - chlorite(ClO2(-)) and chlorate (ClO3(-)) during the disinfection process. The formation of ClO2(-) and consumption of ClO2 almost accurred simultaneously, during water treatment process, some 70 % of the ClO2 in the reaction take forms of ClO2(-) and chloride to be left over immediately. The ClO3(-) is formed only under condition of high pH or in existence of hypochlorous acid. Based on research done presently, the ordinary toxicity of ClO2, ClO2(-), ClO3(-) and mixed aqueous solution of ClO2 are tested in this paper, including acute toxicity and cumulate toxicity of aqueous solution of ClO2, ClO2(-), ClO3(-) and mixed aqueous solution of ClO2. This study provides significant sanitary toxicological data for using ClO2 to disinfect drinking water. Under the dosages designed in this test, the following conclusions can be achieved based on rats 90-day feeding: There is no obvious influence of the mixed liquid on weight-gaining and food utilization efficiency of rats. The results of hematological examination show that this mixed liquid has on influence on WBC and Hb of rats. The result show that in blood serum of rats, there is no obvious difference between male and female of contrastive group and high dosage group on these 4 indexes.
