Self-compacting concrete for light-weight slabs
Lightweight concrete is advantageous for handling on site, heat insulation, and earthquake resistance because of reduced self-weight. A highly workable concrete is also desirable when a heavy reinforcement and a complex formwork are used. In this experimental study, lightweight self-compacting concrete is produced by lightweight pumice aggregates and air entrainment. Slabs are cast with conventional concrete, lightweight concrete and self-compacting light-weight concrete and tested for the evaluation of fresh and hardened concrete properties. A 3-D steel mesh reinforcement is also used for increasing the mechanical performance of the slabs. The performance of the slabs are evaluated and compared by flexural test. It is seen that it is possible to cast light-weight self-compacting concrete slabs with good workability and comparable mechanical strength.
