Gypsum is ubiquitous, with natural deposits found on every continent. Added to this, is the proliferation of synthetic gypsum production (primarily from flue gas desulphurisation systems), spurred on by governmental legislation to combat air pollution. This is a fortunate scenario, as gypsum is also one of the most important minerals used in construction. Its scattered occurrence allows building materials producers - usually the gypsum producers themselves - convenient access to widespread geographic markets, while keeping transport costs down. Gypsum-based construction products plants are to be found in proximity to a mine or quarry, or a coal-fired power station. Indeed, the gypsum industry is one of the most vertically integrated in the whole industrial minerals business, and there is a myriad of producers across the globe. Its leading players, however, are multinational and these (BPB plc, Knauf Group, Lafarge Group, US Gypsum, National Gypsum) are covered in the work.
