High-strength concrete exposed to elevated temperature - spalling and protection
An experimental investigation an spalling of high-strength concrete with different moisture contents (40 %, 60 %, 100 %) and different types of coarse aggregates (gravel and pebble) was conducted at a heating rate of 10 deg C/min up to 800 deg C. Specimens with polypropylene fibers and Metamax fibers (2D and SD) were also heated under the same heating regime. Residual compressive strengths were tested an specimens subject to high temperature. Results indicate explosive spalling was not observed in specimens with pebble aggregates but occurred in the ones with gravel aggregates of 100 % moisture content. There appeared more micro-cracks an the surface and had a more than 10 % compressive strength reduction of specimens with pebble aggregates relative to the ones with gravel aggregates. The presence of polypropylene and 2D Metamax fibers exhibited a perfect protection an spalling of high-strength concrete.
