A study of plastic shrinkage of self-compacting concrete
Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) is mainly used in France in horizontal applications, like slabs. This kind of structures is particularly sensitive to plastic shrinkage cracking since they offer a large surface area to drying. The purpose of this investigation is a comparison of free plastic shrinkage of Self-Compacting Concrete and Ordinary Concrete (OC). Six SCC compositions and five OC compositions were tested. Mix compositions have different constituents and different compressive strengths. Plastic shrinkage was measured for all composition at 20 deg C and 50 % HR by a device using laser sensors. For an equal evaporation rate, plastic shrinkage amount of SCC was found to be at least two times higher compared to the OC one. Based on the experimental results, the paper proposes some significant parameters for a better analysis of plastic shrinkage evolution.
