Some properties of NaOH activated blastfurnace slag concretes
Binders with properties close to ordinary Portland cement could be obtained by blending of Romanian granulated fine ground blastfurnace slag with NaOH. Concretes with lower w/b ratio at the same workability could be realised when using this type of binder, especially for a high dosage. Compressive strengths of about 30 N/mm2 were registered for the concretes with high dosage of binder after 28 days of hardening and increases of about 20% were achieved after one year. Tensile strength showed same decreases after 28 days of hardening due probably to drying shrinkage of the concretes. Drying shrinkage depends on binder dosage and w/b ratio and show important increases even at later ages, aspect related with particularity of the pore size distribution in alkali activated slag binders. Carbonation process seems to be faster than in ordinary Portland cement concrete, but a high dosage of binder greatly reduces the advances of this process. Concretes with high dosage of alkali activated slag binder show a good resistance to water penetration and to freezing - thawing action.
