Avaliacao da expansibilidade das escorias de aciaria electrica para uso em pavimentacao
The slag generated in Brazilian Steel Plants have not been received a consolidated use in its own process and even in other sectors. Most of this solid waste has been used as granular material to secondary roads. However, pavements cracks have occurred due to the volumetric variation of the slags, which may be associated to free CaO and MgO, iron oxides e other compounds linked to expansion phenomena. The necessary time to stabilize a slag may be dependent to its composition, processing, structure, and storage conditions. So, to know its stabilization time, it is necessary to study its behavior along time in a pile and its possible utilization. This work aims to evaluate the electric arc furnace slag expansibility as a function of time and to characterize your properties for its utilization as pavement aggregate. Slag piles with different granulometries were built to evaluate its expansion during one year. Periodical sampling was carried out to evaluate the physical and chemical behavior and the slag volumetric expansibility via accelerated tests. In order to use the slag as granular layer, pavement specific tests were carried out in order to determine the aggregate characteristics. The results have shown that the slag tends to stabilize from the sixth month, meaning that it can be used for base of roads. At the same time, some compounds may continue to provoke expansibility, such as the oxidation of metallic phase, when considering the mortar prismatic bars test, which evaluates the expansibility of slag for its use as an aggregate for mortar material. The chemical and structural characterization is still showing the presence of the usual expansive compounds even after the sixth month of environment exposition. The study results led to the conclusion that the use of electric arc furnace slag as pavement material is possible, providing remarkably good technical quality and economic advantages.
