Biodeterioration and weathring of three different sites of the latin american cultural heritage
Microbiological procedures and microscopic observations (optical microscope, SEM and ESEM) allowed us to conclude that heterotrophic bacteria, fungi and cyanobacteria are the main microbial contaminants in the three cases chosen for this study. Yearly average values for airborne pollutants show a high chloride contamination for Tulum located at the seashore. In this case rock decay would be mainly caused by the aggressive marine atmosphere as it has been reported in the literature. Chemical and surface analyses suggest that in the case of the Mayan site of Uxmal -located in an non polluted rural atmosphere- the main mechanism of limestone deterioration would be accomplished through a biosolubilization process involving metabolic acids produced by bacteria and fungi. The role of atmospheric pollutants in the deterioration of structural materials would be also relevant in the Cathedral of La Plata located in a mixed urban/industrial environment of strong aggressive characteristics.
