Don't get burned by flame standards
Material in passenger railcars, automobiles, airplanes, and associated equipment must meet FST standards (flame, smoke, and toxicity). Yet such standards often differ from country to country. Countries have unique ways of testing materials and determining acceptable limits. However, an understanding of these different standards becomes increasingly important for companies trying to become truly global. To help evaluate materials, three key criteria are examined: flame spread and ignition; optical smoke density; and toxicity of emitted smoke. In the paper, the standards of four countries are compared: U.S., U.K., France, and Germany. The standards are in this order of countries: Flame propagation ASTM E 162; BS 6853 Appendix A9 and BS 2782 (material dependent); NF T 51-071 and NF C 20-455; DIN 53 438 Parts 1 to 3 and E DIN 54 837; toxicity SMP 800C; BS 6853 Appendix B.5 and NF X 70-100; NF X 70-100; -; smoke generation ASTM E 662; BS 6853 Appendix D.8.3; NF X 10-702; E DIN 54 837.
