Estimates of the quantities of recycled aggregates in Scotland
A survey methodology for the collection of time series data relating to aggregate waste arisings, recycling and landfill in Scotland is described, and the quantities estimated from pilot survey for 1999 are reported. Data are given for construction and demolition waste, industrial waste and by-products and bituminous planings and breakout. Additional categories are reported. Of an estimated 10200 kt of arisings, some 5200 kt were landfilled and 5500 kt recycled. The additional 500 kt are accounted for by the consumption of existing stocks of industrial wastes and by-products. Data for recycled quantities are reported in terms of the utility of the application to which the aggregates are put. Targets for the recycling of aggregates in the future are given.
