New corrosion protection methods for existing reinforced concrete structures
Existing corrosion protection methods (epoxy and zinc coatings, cathodic protection, stainless steel) for reinforced concrete structures are efficient, but in most cases are very expensive or have a short service life. This paper describes some new combined corrosion protection methods, which utilize cathodic protection together with other techniques, which decrease the corrosivity of the environment surrounding the reinforcing steel. A combined corrosion protection method for existing steel-reinforced concrete structures, including some variations of cathodic protection and electro-osmosis treatment has been created: periodic electro-osmosis treatment to decrease the corrosion and increase the resistance of concrete environment to about 3 - 4 times and simultaneously cathodic protection with decreased current density for about 4 - 6 times; simultaneous electro-osmosis treatment and cathodic protection with decreased current density for about 5 - 10 times. The recommended method greatly decreases the numbers of anodes, rectifiers and is highly cost effective. The system can ensure 80 % to 95 % efficiency. In this case it is possible to decrease corrosion rate by about 5 - 20 times.
