The confused world of sulfate attack on concrete
The issues involved in external sulfate attack were discussed. Differences between the mere occurrence of chemical reactions of sulfates with hydrated cement paste and the damage or deterioration of concrete were presented. The standards and guides for the classification of the severity of exposure of structures to sulfates were reviewed. It was concluded that chemical reaction occurring is not evidence of damage and of consequential loss to the owner of the given concrete.
