Tubular steel bridges with cast steel nodes - innovative solutions in modern bridge design
This contribution gives an overview on the actual applications of circular hollow section members as a relatively new concept in steel bridge design. Tubular steel bridges e. g. spatial truss girders built up with tubular members are more and more used in modern bridge design due to their architectural transparent appearance. The application of such constructions is strongly influenced by the design and manufacturing of the joints as cast steel nodes or welded nodes. The state of the art in the areas of research and development, design specifications, fabrication and quality control is outlined as well as the practical experience with the design and construction of recent truss bridges, two with cast steel nodes and two with welded nodes.
