Application of 3 % Ni advanced weathering steel to unpainted viaducts in coastal region
When conventional weathering steel is applied to unpainted bridge at the position where the bridge is constructed near the coastline and/or origin of air-born salt, the expected effect of it on LCC (life cycle cost) is not always achieved. Therefore an advanced weathering steel is developed for the application to the higher air-born salt environment than the application limit (0.05mdd (mg/dm(exp2)/day) in Japan) for conventional weathering steel. Together with steel plates, welding materials and the high tension bolt have been prepared. The developed steel materials were applied to unpainted viaducts for high-speed railway in the vicinity of the Sea of Japan coast for the first time in 1998, with performances of various devices regarding structural forms. the paper reports the design pholosophy and corrosion protection mechanism of the developed 3 % Ni advanced weathering steel having enhanced salt corrosion resistance.
