Safer and more economical steel sabo dam designs
A number of steel grid open-type sabo dams have been constructed since 1979. Many of these dams catch and contain debris flow very well. In one incident, in 1998, a very large debris flow hit a steel grid dam. The dam was able to maintain debris flow, but a part of steel pipe members were damaged. To prevent this kind of damage, Kobe Steel developed a new type of sabo dam to improve safety and to reduce construction costs. The design characteristics of this new type of dam are introduced in this paper.
