Emergency power rescues Michigan's upper Peninsula
The provision for supplying emergency power rescues to customers in Upper Peninsula, Michigan is discussed. The emergency generators, which are fully integrated and digitally controlled, have built-in smart functionality for self-diagnostics and remote operation. Winconsin Public Service (WPS) constructed a temporary substation near an existing 69 kV transmission line. WPS supplied a 100 MW mobile transformer to boost the 13.8 kV to transmission line voltage of 69 kV. The emergency generators and old peaking unit supplied most of utility's power deficit, allowing cleanup and repairs to be made to the flooded power plants.
