Penetration depth of different water repellent agents
The designed service life of reinforced concrete structures often is not reached because of early deterioration and damage. Corrosion of steel reinforcement induced by chloride is one of the most important damage mechanisms. Chloride dissolved in water can penetrate through the covercrete by capillary suction of saline solutions. Surface treatment of concrete is a very efficient method to reduce liquid water absorption. If water repellent treatment is to be applied to form a durable chloride barrier it is necessary to obtain a sufficient penetration depth and enough water repellent agent has to cover the internal surface of concrete. In this contribution results will be presented of comparative studies of the penetration depth while using three different water repellent agents on four types of concrete. Based on the results criteria to obtain a required penetration depth can be formulated. It is also possible to indicate an appropriate application technique to have the necessary amount of water repellent agent absorbed by a given concrete quality. Water absorption of concrete treated with three different water repellent agents has been determined.
