The future of lime for steelmaking
The current status and outlook of the lime production and usage in North America are discussed. The North American (US and Canada) lime industry is operating close to full capacity in 2004. The US lime industry recorded an output of over 22 million short tons (US only) in 2003 and provided lime to a variety of end use industries. This represented an increase of more than 7% over 2002, and this followed a period of 5 years of reducing output, when some lime production capacity was lost to the industry. Overall, the result has been a very difficult supply situation in 2004 in some locations, and lime is being shipped unusually large distances to balance demand. Lime additions in steelmaking will use new sophisticated equipment and process control. Lime usage will be more efficient. Sulfur levels in lime will increase where possible and low sulfur lime will be in shorter supply and will cost more. Further testing and analysis is required to determine economic impact on steelmaking from injection technology and high sulfur lime practice.
