Service life prediction of high performance concrete mixture subjected to chloride penetration
The time to initiate corrosion in a reinforced concrete slab used for the construction of a parking structure was investigated. The penetration of chloride ions, along with the coupled transport of moisture and other ionic species, was predicted using a numerical software. In order to generate the input data required to run the model, concrete samples provided by a concrete producer were fully characterized using various experimental techniques. Information on the exposures conditions was generated by assessing the chloride penetration in adjacent parking structure built with a similar concrete mixture. Following a sensitivity analysis, numerical simulations were run over an 80-year period assuming realistic (and fluctuating) exposure conditions. The numerical simulations showed that corrosion was likely to be initiated after roughly 50 years of exposure.
