The goal of this work is to prove the validity of using synthetic sea water as an alternative method instead of the NaCl solution used in stress corrosion crack growth tests in aluminium alloys, according to ASTM G 44. Several samples of 7075 alloy have been tested in different conditions and directions in both environments, which can be considered as equivalent. Only the samples tested in thickness direction have shown crack growth during the test. The use of sea water entails a great advantage in practice, by less superficial alteration, and lets therefore a much more reliable measure of the crack.
