Tension stiffening of reinforced concrete ties strengthened with externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer sheets
In this paper, the results of experimental tests on RC ties strengthened with FRP sheets are presented. The paper focuses on the behavior in the seviceability state; in particular, verifications in terms of cracks widths and crack spacing, used to warrant the functionality of FRP-RC structures, are considered. The analysis of the experimental results and comparison with tension stiffening code models shows some interesting aspects: The variation of crack spacing and crack widths due to the FRP reinforcement depends on the steel reinforcement and the amount of FRP sheet; The effect of FRP on the tension stiffening effect is relevant in comparing the experimental results for specimens at the same load, but it is negligible in considering the same steel stress, showing that probably the tension stiffening behavior of the steel bar is not influenced by the FRP reinforcement. The experimental cracking load is often lower than the theoretical ones, while the theoretical ultimate load is greater than the experimental one because of delamination failure.
