Geogrid-reinforced soil retaining walls
In a supermarket construction project in Jalapa City (Mexico), it was imperative to build a vertical retaining wall with a length of 510 m. After a detailed technical and economical analysis using the project's proposed wall geometry and the site's initial conditions, it was determined to reinforce the soil with geogrids. Horizontal layers of geogrids reinforce the soil of the compacted embankment to a final retaining soil element. The next step was to determine the necessary tensile strength of the geogrid, the anchorage length, the spread between each layer of geogrid, and the wrap-around length for every cross-section of the reinforced retaining wall. The specifications of the geogrid (ACE GG 60-I) met the project's needs: Type of geogrid: woven, high-strength polyester yarns coated with black PVC; ultimate tensile strength (MD) 60 kN/m; long-term design strength 30.46 kN/m: creep limited strength (MD): 45.45 kN/m. The installation procedure was made as a conventional compacted embankment procedure. This system does not require specialized labour or special equipment and tools. The drainage system is based on another geosynthetic: a geocomposite. The product had a 5 mm thick geonet covered at both sides with a light geotextile. The geogrid reinforced retaining wall provided valuable benefits over traditional approaches, such as: it reduced the cost, saved construction time, used the site soils, and the geosynthetic materials were easy to ship to the site
