Vibration compensation of slender beams and thin shell structures by distributed piezoelectric patches
In this paper, the problem of thin-walled structures is considered, which are subjected to an imposed rigid-body motion of the supporting boundary. The elastic vibrations of the structures are compensated by means of an additional eigenstrain distribution generated by piezoelectric actuation. As an application, dynamic shape control of a slender cantilever beam is studied, where the support is moved harmonically. Appropriate positions for discrete piezoelectric patches are derived. These locations are verified by finite-element computations and laboratory experiments. A feedforward control-strategy (FX-LMS) is used for increasing the performance of the system. As an application with high practical relevance, noise radiation of the shell-type casing of a magnetic-resonance tomograph is presently under investigation.
