Tuned liquid column damper - a cheap device for control of tall building vibrations
Sealed liquid column dampers (TLCD) are tuned in the low frequency range of application (say below four Hertz) with respect to a selected natural frequency of the main structure in analogy to the classical tuned mass damper (TMD) by means of a transformation of the optimal parameters. To improve the performance in MDOF-buildings even further, the influence of neighboring modes is taken into account, e.g., by minimizing the weighted squared area below the impulse response function in state space, rendering slightly changed optimal parameters. Reduction of transient peaks requires controlled pressure input into the air chamber, e.g., bang-bang control.
