Controlling seismic vibrations with magnetorheological tuned mass dampers
This paper presents a new semi-active tuned mass damper (SATMD), the Magnetorheological Tuned Mass Damper or MR-TMD for civil structures. The magnetorheological (MR) damper provides variable damping that can be adjusted in real-time, to ensure that the TMD provides superior energy dissipation to passive TMD's despite off tuning or nonlinear structure behavior. The paper presents an experimental implementation of the device on a shake table with a representative analytical model, control algorithm based on off-toward-equilibnum (OTE), and control system based on acceleration feedback. The authors built a prototype MR-TMD and control system, and describe preliminary results of the first experimental study on a shake table of the feasibility and effectiveness of MR-TMD's to improve the dynamic response of structures exhibiting both linear and nonlinear behavior.
