Electromagnetic properties of fiber reinforced polymer and concrete
A comprehensive database of electromagnetic (EM) properties of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and concrete is essential for modeling and designing EM wave-based nondestructive evaluation (NDE) systems. In this paper, the variation of electromagnetic properties of FRP and concrete was experimentally studied over a frequency range from 0.1 to 20.0 GHz. FRP samples were obtained from several manufactures with different material types, numbers of layers, and applications. In order to examine the aging effects on the EM properties, some FRP samples have been exposed to outside environments for more than 2 years. Concrete specimens with different strength values and water contents were also constructed. A specially designed refletometer and an open-ended coaxial probe were respectively employed for the measurement. The database of the EM properties of FRP and concrete developed in this study will serve as a foundation for developing EM wave-based NDE technology.
